Jaime’s 5 Simple Principles
Respect isn’t groundbreaking—but it’s essential. It’s the bedrock of genuine leadership. Respect starts from within and shows up clearly in how you treat others, how you respond to challenges, and how you carry yourself each day. True respect means bringing your best self forward—right here, right now, in every interaction. It changed my life profoundly when I learned from a Two Start General that respect isn't just about your past achievements; it’s about what you're doing right now.
RESPECT
BE NICE
Being nice isn’t always easy—but it’s powerful. I once swapped airplane seats, leading me to meet Ken, a Medal of Honor recipient whose kindness and humility forever changed me. That encounter taught me clearly: kindness isn’t transactional—it’s transformational. Each act of kindness is a choice and choosing to be nice even when it’s inconvenient can lead to life-changing experiences. Make kindness your default setting, and watch how quickly your world, and those around you, transforms.
Leadership might be serious business—but if you’re not laughing along the way, you’re doing it wrong. Laughter isn’t just good for your health; it builds trust, fosters connection, and reminds us that we're all human. Great leaders know how to lighten the mood, build camaraderie, and create teams that genuinely enjoy working together. Remember, we’re all in this together—so let’s laugh our way forward and start to feel like the leader you were born to be.
LAUGH
We all mess up. We fall short, make mistakes, and sometimes carry burdens that hold us back. You do, I do, and so do the people in our lives who we count on the most. It hurts. It’s hard to let go. Forgiveness isn’t about ignoring accountability or excusing poor behavior—it’s about freeing yourself from unnecessary weight. I learned this clearly during a cold January in Iowa, stranded in a freezing motorhome with an empty fuel tank, feeling like I'd let everyone down. That night, I came across a book in the motorhome. It was Andy Andrews’ book The Traveler’s Gift that helped me understand the importance of forgiving myself first. Self-forgiveness is the hardest—but it’s also the most freeing.
FORGIVENESS
Gratefulness isn’t a fleeting feeling—it’s a conscious practice. Believe it or not, you actually have to work on it. One of my favorite daily rituals is a “Grateful Walk,” where I intentionally reflect on everything I’m thankful for. Not a marathon, just a three-minute stroll. You see, genuine gratitude changes your perspective, elevates your mood, and helps you recognize the abundance that already surrounds you. Gratitude isn’t just good manners; it’s life-changing fuel. When you consistently choose gratefulness, you’ll find joy and meaning in even the smallest moments and learn that life isn’t bad. You may just be focused on the wrong things.
